The Border Cities Of El Paso And Ciudad Juarez - 1525 Words

Along the Texas/Mexico border there are many border cities, and among the border cities there is a trend that points to an advantage of prosperity on the US side compared to the Mexican side of the border. The border cities of El Paso and Ciudad Juarez show an example of the US advantage over the Mexican side; El Paso is a Texas city on the Texas/Mexico border, and in 2014 it was the city with the lowest crime rate in the US ; Ciudad Juarez, on the other hand was known as one of the deadliest cities in Mexico . Along with the differences in crime rates, El Paso and Ciudad Juarez have many differences that make them clear examples of the advantage that Texas border cities hold over Mexican border cities. Crime In 2010, Ciudad Juarez was one of the most violent cities in all of Mexico with 3,057 murders . Ciudad Juarez became an example of the extent of the drug war that was occurring in Mexico in the 2000s. Death had become a common occurrence in Ciudad Juarez. At the height of the drug war in Mexico, between the years of 2007 and 2012, around 11,078 people were murdered in Ciudad Juarez . In contrast to Ciudad Juarez, El Paso had the lowest crime rate in the US in 2014 . According to the Neighborhood Scout website’s interactive map, crime rates in the city of El Paso are for the most part low, but near the border there is a high crime rate. The higher crime rate found along the border is probably due to the ongoing drug trade and illegal immigration that occurs along theShow MoreRelatedCommunity Hazard Assessment : Paso Del Norte1643 Words   |  7 PagesHazard Assessment: Paso del Norte Trista R. Fantasy Christmas Shopping Lesson Plan

Christmas shopping is fun for both the shopper and the recipient. When the Sunday papers begin to show up on Thanksgiving, your students are eagerly looking at the advertising section in the middle. Why not create a Make Believe shopping activity that will harness your students Christmas enthusiasm and turn it into independent problem solving academic behavior? This lesson plan features a project that provides project-based learning. Lesson Plan Title: A Fantasy Christmas Shopping Spree. Student Level Grades 4 through 12, depending on students ability. Objectives Students will choose items for family members within a prescribed budget.Students will assemble choices on a T Chart with a full accounting of money spent, including sales tax.Students will share their Shopping Fantasy with peers. This plan involves both Math and English Language Arts Standards. Math Math Operations and Algebraic 4.OA.3. Solve multi-step word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding. English Language Arts RI (Reading Informational Text) 4.7. Interpret information presented visually, orally, or quantitatively (e.g., in charts, graphs, diagrams, time lines, animations, or interactive elements on Web pages) and explain how the information contributes to an understanding of the text in which it appears. W (Writing). 4.4. Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. Time Three 30 minute periods (in a 50 minute period, use 15 minutes for warm-up and the last 5 minutes for wrap up and closure.) Materials Shopping inserts from your local Sunday Newspapers. The T Chart that lays out the project.Planning sheets for each family member.Scissors, glue and writing utensils.A Rubric for the project.12 X 18 Construction paper for folders, scrap construction paper, and other art supplies. Procedure: Day One Anticipatory Set Pair and Share: have students partner with someone and share what is on their Christmas wish list. Report out.Present and review the T-chart and the Rubric. Students need to know that they must stay within the budget (created by taking the number of family members and multiplying it by $50.)Planning: Have each student  take as many pages as they have members of their family. Sometimes its a good idea to put them (your students) into the mix: it motivates them. I have found the enthusiasm that they have for choosing things for their families is enough: for students on the autism spectrum, I would recommend a page for each student as well. The planning page guides them through a brainstorming activity: what sort of things would your mother, sister, brother like? That will help focus their shopping spree.Let students loose with the advertisers: task them with choosing something for each member of their family, cut the item out and put it in the business envelope.Check in five minutes before the bell:Ask Individual children to share their choices: Who did you shop for? How much have you spent so far?Review estimation: About how much did you spend? Round to the nearest dollar or to the nearest 10. Model on the board.Review tasks: what has been completed and what you will do the next day. Day Two Review: Take the time to check in: What have you finished? Who has already found all their items? Remind them that they have to stay within the budget, including tax (if your students understand multiplication and percents. Dont include sales tax for students who are still only adding and subtracting. Modify this to your students abilities. You are special educators, remember?)Give time to students to continue their work: you may want to check in with students who need extra support to be sure they are not getting waylaid.Check in before dismissal to check progress. State when the end date will be: Tomorrow, or will you provide time and materials at the end of each period? You might easily spread this activity over the balance of a week. Final Day Presentations: give your students an opportunity to present their final projects. You might want to mount them a bulletin board and give students a pointer.Presentations should include who is in their family, what each one wants.Provide lots of feedback, especially praise. This is a good time to teach students to learn to give feedback, as well, though focus on positive feedback only.Return the rubric with a grade and notes. Evaluation and Follow-Up Follow up is about being sure that your students have learned something from the process: Did they follow all the directions? Did they figure the tax correctly? Students grades are based on the rubric.  If you have differentiated your use of them, many students who have never gotten an A will get an A on this project. I remember the incredible excitement my students in Philadelphia experienced to get that first A. They worked hard and deserved them.

On-Time Package Delivery Free Essays

Case 2: On-Time Package Delivery Michael Bushmann Erika Thompson Jocelyn Russell Katlin Eason Mark Hogan MKT 452- Sales Management November 14, 2012 Overall, we felt that Wayne Jacobson – Senior Vice President of Sales performed his responsibilities very well. Furthermore, it was good to see that he was so vested into figuring out the problems of the company. Ultimately, the negative effects that were found could be detrimental to the sales personnel, but further – his position and the company as a whole. We will write a custom essay sample on On-Time Package Delivery or any similar topic only for you Order Now Jacobson conducted an effective job analysis by conversing with: current employees/sales staff, managers, and customers. Additionally, Jacobson calling upon local district managers before calling sales representatives or KAM’s displays that he is truly a â€Å"team member. † Now we would like to go into the problems, one-by- one, along with what we feel are respectable solutions for On-Time Package Delivery. Competition On-Time Pack Delivery is a niche company OTPD delivery services are specific to documents and small packages to be delivered quickly, reliably, and cost effective. Being the first intracity package delivery service to maximize technology gives them a great advantage. OPTD targets a condensed Market of 4 districts: Eastern U. S. cities- New York, Boston, Washington, and Philadelphia. UPS, FedEx, and U. S. Postal Service are considered competition to an extent. However, OPTD markets towards a portion of their customers (legal and consulting firms). â€Å"OTPD has carved out a niche by focusing on express intracity package delivery. † The condensed region gives OTPD no reason for decline in salesSolution: Solution: Ron Young founded OTPD as a solution to a problem and generated a business model of highly trained â€Å"delivery specialist† . The trained specialist, improved technology services, and great customer service in the package delivery business is what yielded a loyal customer base. REMEMBER: These attributes have helped establish OTPD as a company. OTPD sales forces needs to refocus on customer service considering these attributes are what initially established loyal customers. Being OTPD was the first company to enter the specific market of quick reliable delivery services, this gives them an advantage. The company needs to refocus on their customer service strategy to remain established before more competitors enter the market. Competition within OTPD? Setting higher sales standards within the company will provoke the sales force to compete amongst them selves. Lack of competition within the company. Stimulated from– OTPD targeting only a 4% sales growth, when the national average is 8%, Why? OTPD sales force are given cell phones (unlimited use), laptops, company cars, and outrageous salaries. OPTD needs to focus on exceeding their sales goals before smaller companies similar to Gold Package Delivery Services quickly come about take over the small niche market. Solution: OTPD should consider removing some of the sales forces privileges. While cell phones and laptops are necessities for the delivery services, outrageous salaries and a company car should not be. Taking away a a company car and lowering salaries would trigger sales competition within the company. A company car should only be awarded to those who- reach a certain sales growth percentage establish new customers maintain a certain level of customer service, i. e. quick and reliable Role Perceptions Role Conflict Judy Billings was accused of lacking customer service by Clark, Burton, and Bowers, one of their largest customers, but it was contributed to unreasonable demands by her DM Dan Gunther. This is placing Judy in a position of the â€Å"person in the middle† where she has conflicting expectations of her responsibility To solve this problem the job roles need to be laid out clearly for each employee to understand. There should be no confusion when it comes to taking care of customers. Salespeople should also meet with their cliental on a regular basis. This will reduce role conflict Training will also be a huge factor in solving this issue Role Ambiguity Lynn Attaway made the mistake of making a client wait for more than five hours when their package was promised within two hours This was contributed to lack of information concerning the changes to the Package Expedite Form (PEF) which was sent through email for employees to see Solutions Better communication throughout the work place from management down through all levels Training Weekly/monthly meetings where employees can learn and have a better understanding of new technology they will be working with. Mike Wagner recently visited First Call Medical Centers where he heard that Gold Package Delivery Services was offering similar services for a lower cost Could not give them an answer as to why OTPD’s costs were so much higher Felt he did not have adequate information on the competition Solutions Mentoring Someone else’s insight would have been beneficial in this instance just so he wouldn’t seem so uninformed when talking with clients On the job training Closer supervision This will reduce role ambiguity Work-Family Conflict Problem Role Conflict: Some employees may become unsure about how they want to spend most of their time and what is most important. Employers should be concerned about their employees plateauing. Carol Klein, Key Account Manager in Philadelphia, â€Å"I find myself being torn between doing an outstanding job at the OTPD and being a mom to Alice. † Solution Activities that bring the employee’s work and home lives closer. One step to a solution would be to no longer give Sales Representatives cars, and to save that luxury for the D and upper level personnel. Instead of cars, OTPD could give sales representatives a card to put gas on and maybe even a stipend for car maintenance. This not only saves OTPD money, but it also gives sales representatives another level of incentives to work to achieve. Instead of buying all those cars, OTPD could use the money saved to have more family event and functions. Another idea would also be to have an in-house daycare facility. By having these functions, OTPD will be more of a family-friendly environment. Employees would feel like their family life and their work life would be able to blend together more. Training Each level of employee (key account managers, sales reps and district managers) need to be trained individually. Some employees are making mistakes which are leading to key accounts being dissatisfied: Example: Lynn Attaway, Key Account Manager, made the mistake with the Strawn, Night and Squires (SNS) client regarding the Package Expited Form (PEF). This all happened because Attaway was emailed the changes to the Package Expedited Form. Attaway said that she receives hundreds of emails every day and must have missed the email. I suspect that many other employees missed the email too. Attaway said, â€Å"I get dozens of emails every day and that one must have slipped by me†. Emailing is NOT the way to train and educate employees about changes in the business. When a change like this is made to the way packages are sent out, a meeting must be called to discuss and learn the new changes. Mike Wagner, Sales Representative in Washington D. C. District also made remarks that suggested more adequate training is required. When Jacobson asked if Wagner needed more information on the competition in order to respond to questions he replied, â€Å"Yes, I did not have a good understanding of how our products compared with Golf Package Delivery† On-Time Package Delivery should designate one morning every 12 weeks to educating their employees about the competition and how it has changed. This is essential in order to be able to tell clients why OTPD’s products and services are superior. With our current report, we hope that OTPD implements many of our solutions to become the company that we once were. OTPD customers will love doing business with us as we deliver by: maximizing our technology, high level of customer service, and new innovations will lead to more loyal clients and customers. Furthermore, we will become the premier intra-city package delivery company in the eastern United States and beyond! How to cite On-Time Package Delivery, Essay examples

Ethics - Leadership and Decision Making

Question: Discuss about the Ethics, Leadership and Decision Making. Answer: Introduction Nowadays, changes in the business environment have resulted in the occurrence of different situations in the organization that poses ethical dilemma. The company faces different types of ethical dilemmas such as dilemmas related to technology, health and safety of employees, transparency of different business operations and existence of fair working conditions. There is an occurrence of many accounting scandals by the companies as they do not disclose the material information to its stakeholders. It is requisite for the companies to provide accurate and complete reporting of the financial information in the accounting reports (Collins, 2009). It is essential for the businesses to communicate the information in a transparent manner without misrepresenting the information. Avoidance of the full representation of the information has a negative impact on the business operations of the company (Johnson, 2015). This report emphasizes on the accounting scandal of Valeant Pharmaceuticals International. Besides this, it also emphasizes on the ethical theories relevant to the scandal of Valeant Pharmaceuticals. In addition to this, it also provides information related to the existence of the relationship between ethics and leadership. It also emphasizes on the measures that can be adopted by the organization to overcome the situation of ethical dilemma. Ethical Dilemma in Valeant Pharmaceuticals The company has appointed a new leader Michael Pearson in the year 2008 in order to implement a new strategy for the purpose of accelerating the growth of the company. For this purpose, the company has made aggressive acquisitions of different companies which resulted in an increase in the debt of the company (Law 360, 2016). Besides this, the company has also increase the prices of the drugs offered by it for the purpose of increasing its revenue in order to improve its financial performance and position in the market. It has been done by the company in order to reduce the cost incurred in the research and development programs that are used by the pharmaceutical companies in the past (Trevino Nelson, 2010). This is the reason that the company is facing various investigations carried out by different governmental authorities such as US Attorneys Office, the SEC and Congress. In the year 2016, the company has recorded incorrect revenue of $58 million due to its relationship with Phil idor Pharmaceuticals which is not disclosed by the company (Law 360, 2016). It had recorded the revenue prior to the sale has to be done by the Philidor pharmaceuticals. In addition to this, in earlier years the company has omitted the record of integration cost and other basic expenses incurred in acquiring the companies such as Bausch and Lomb. The other ethical issue faced by the company is that the company has recorded sales from controlled and related companies of Valeant . For the purpose of representing increase in the purchases, the company has shown providing large discounts to wholesalers and customers which is regarded as channel stuffing (Champoux, 2010). The company has shown an increase in the prices of two drugs which are used to treat heart ailments namely Nitropress and Isuprel of 525% and 212% in a respective manner (Law 360, 2016). By performing such activities the company is considered failed in terms of corporate governance practices. The accounting staff and the CEO of the company has omitted various accounting requirements for the purpose of increasing the revenues and profitability through its acquisitions which results in increasing in the value of debt for the company. The company has not considered different ways that can lead it up to attain sustainable growth. For the purpose of increasing the revenues and profitability of the company, the CEO of the company has find rapid solutions to difficult issues by the way of omission of the events that has taken place and has a significant impact on the financial performance and position of the company (Daft Marcic, 2006). Ethical Theories Ethical theories are the basic need to attain solutions to difficult problems and situations faced by people in their life. There are different ethical theories which help in getting solutions to the problems faced by the people such as Kantianism, contract theory, utilitarianism and virtue ethics. In context to Valeant Pharmaceuticals, utilitarianism theory is applicable. This theory gives emphasis on the delivering happiness and suffering to people through the actions of a person. There is a need to act in an appropriate manner for the purpose of maximizing the amount of happiness and minimizing the suffering caused to an individual or a group. For the purpose of attainment of maximization of the amount of happiness and minimizing the amount of sufferings, there can be a possibility that the individual or a group break the traditional method of performing different actions (LaFollette Persson,2013). As per this theory, an action of an individual is considered right in a moral terms if it results in providing happiness to large number of people in the society. In addition to this, the outcomes and actions are dependent on the circumstances. There is no moral principle which is considered right and necessary under this theory. This theory proposes that an action of an individual is carried out in such a way that it would result in producing good results for the large number of people. Besides this, this theory bases the right and wrong of the actions on the outcomes of making a choice between the action and policy over other actions and policies (Robinson Moulton, 2005). This theory postulates that the action is considered right if it results in the production of the benefits for the people that have a stake in it. If the people achieve benefits from the actions pursued by a group or individual then the theory does not consider the actions performed by the individual as wrong in case of lies, coercion and manipulation. This type of moral reasoning is used in day to day life in which the benefits from the performance of the actions is provided by the individual along with the prevention of the harms by carrying out such type of action. All the people such as business analysts, scientists and legislators analyze the benefits and harms of policies for the purpose of taking appropriate decisions (Broad, 2014). In context to Valeant Pharmaceuticals, this theory is suitable as the professionals of the company have made fraudulent accounting errors for the purpose of increasing the profits of the company. Besides this, the CEO of the company has increased the prices of drugs for the purpose of increasing the revenues of the company. This helps in increasing the profits of the company which is beneficial for the company as well as for its stakeholders. This is because; increase in the sales and profits of the company results in increasing the return on the investments by the company. Along with this, employees also get benefit from such actions in the form of increase in their pay (Landau, 2012). The principle of least harm which postulates that the decision maker make a choice of those actions which results in producing least harm for the people. This principle stated that the decision maker make a choice of those actions, which provide harm to few people which is beneficial for large group of people. The decision maker should not perform those tasks which provide harm to the concerned people. Under this principle, the different choices of actions do not appear beneficial wherein the decision maker choose those actions which provide least harm to few people. In context to Valeant Pharmaceuticals, the CEO of the company has made a choice of increasing the revenues of the company by increasing the prices of the drugs which provide harm to least people such as customers. In addition to this, the company has also made errors in the accounting process for the purpose of improving its financial position (Copp, 2005). The other theory is virtue ethics which stated that the judgment is done by the character of the person rather than by their actions that is different from his normal behavior. When a person is performing unusual and unethical behavior, the consideration is given to the morals, motivation and reputation. In context to Valeant Pharmaceuticals, the CEO has a good reputation and is highly motivated but the actions of the CEO results in providing harm to the stakeholders of the company. It has come into notice due to sudden change from morel to immoral behavior and results in the occurrence of significant amount of evidence against him (Birsch, 2013). Interrelationship between ethics, leadership and decision making Application of ethical principles in the organization results in broadening of the priorities of corporate and individual ahead of profit and shareholder enrichment. It is essential for the leaders to have the responsibility to perform ethical behavior for the purpose of making sound decisions. Adoption and implementation of the ethical behavior by the employees and leaders results in aligning of the behavior with the personal values and values of the business (Zimmerli, Richter Holzinger,2007). Effective implementation of the ethical behavior in the organization results in an increase in the productivity and well coordinated teamwork among the employees. In addition tro this, it is essential for the leaders to specify the acceptable behavior from the employees during their recruitment and selection. There is a requirement of high level of dedication towards different jobs by the employees of the organization. A leader is considered ethical if they consider positive and negative views of all the people involved in the activity. In addition to this, it also takes into consideration that the decisions made by the leader is ethical and the members included in the decision making are accountable (Bennis, Goleman O'Toole, 2010). The occurrence of the ethical actions by the people results in enhancing the integrity and credibility of the leader and helps in creating trust among the employees in the organization. This helps in improving the performance and productivity of the employees of the organization. Employees of the organization are able to create faith among them regarding their leaders due to the performance of activities by the leader in an ethical manner.
